Pathophysiology and Therapy for Vision Disorders

The group of Pathophysiology and Therapies for Vision Disorders employs different approaches to clarify the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in inherited retinal diseases like retinitis pigmentosa (RP). This rare disease is the main genetic cause of blindness in the developed world. We are also interested in the study of common eye disorders.

RP, like a most rare diseases, is highly heterogeneous in both clinical and genetic features. The genetic defect is responsible for the death of photoreceptors and pigment epithelium and the progressive loss of vision. However, upregulation of inflammatory mediators such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) as well as oxidative stress, would exacerbate the neurodegenerative process.

Our final purpose is translating our knowledge from the basic sciences into the development of new treatments for patients. We focus on searching new pharmacological therapies to reduce deleterious effects of the chronic inflammation and oxidative stress present in these diseases.

We assess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant therapies in cell models, retinal explant and murine models. Besides, we develop study with RP patients to slow down the vision loss. These pharmacological approaches are mutation-independent therapies.
